Amtrak On Time Performance for February 2006
Members of the All Aboard Yahoo group have compiled on time performance statistics for Amtrak trains/corridors, based on endpoint/terminus arrival delays. As was to be expected, the Coast Starlight comes up last, followed closely by the Sunset Limited. Both these trains run mostly on Union Pacific, which seems to, well, not like passenger trains very much, to put it mildly. Despite this disregard for their obligations towards passenger trains, they (Union Pacific) were recently named “America’s most admired railroad” by Fortune magazine. Go figure …

UP is the most admirable because they focus solely on their priority - freight movement.
Which of course means that the poor passenger trains are just bothersome annoyances.
If only there could be a way to have them have a vested interest in running passenger trains again?
One would think there would be a way.

Why does the Southwest Chief have better on-time performance than Acela and Metroliner? Does Amtrak build more time into its schedule? That doesn’t seem right to me.
I ride the Crescent quite frequently, and prior to Katrina, and the freight congestion that has arisen amidst the Big Easy’s reconstruction, it impressed me with its on-time performance. I mean, it was rarely on time, but it was rarely more than an hour late, and it typically makes up time between Charlottesville, my hometown, and New York.

ben - my guess would be that the SW Chief is a western long distance train and therefore has more padding in the schedule than Northeast Corridor trains. BNSF is pretty good with Amtrak trains. Plus, the Chief only runs once a day while the Acelas run multiple times - more opportunities for delays I guess.

If BNSF is so friendly to Amtrak trains, then how come on-time performance on The San Joaquins is only 36%? The San Joaquins also run on BNSF trackway for most of their route.

I just rode the SW Chief, and it has a full hour of padding time between Fullerton and Los Angeles, the two last stops on the westbound train. It took 25 minutes to travel the distance the schedule indicated 90 for. Just a thought…

our daughter just started riding the Pacific Surfliner from Orange County to San Diego. Its only two weeks into the college year, but the train both ways this weekend was more than an hour late.
If you have some experience with this route and its ontime/ late track record, I would appreciate hearing about it. So far, not so good!
THanks, Greg H.
