This is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time and it looks like I might finally have an opportunity to do this next spring. So right now, I’m thinking:
- Coast Starlight from San Jose to Portland or Seattle
- one day layover in Portland or Seattle (since I don’t want to use the bus if it can be avoided)
- Empire Builder to Chicago
- Lakeshore Limited to Boston
- Acela to Washington
- Cardinal to Chicago
- Southwest Chief to Los Angeles
- Coast Starlight back to San Jose

Any suggestions or improvements would be appreciated (leave a comment). I’d like to try and avoid duplicate routings if possible.

There’s an opportunity to participate in the development of the Bay Area Regional Rail Plan - there will be a series of open houses and workshops in several locations around the bay area.

A coalition of Bay Area transportation agencies including MTC, BART, and Caltrain in cooperation with the California High-Speed Rail Authority is embarking on the development of a Regional Rail Plan for the Bay Area.
