Caltrain proposes more express service

SF Bay commuter train agency Caltrain - like many others around the country - is having budget issues. So what do they do? Cut service? You would think so, but no, that’s not what is being proposed. Instead, they are looking at adding more Baby Bullet trains (with stops different from the current Baby Bullets) and thus actually increasing the number of daily weekday trains from 86 to 88. They looked at the economics and decided that this is the better option than decreasing the number of trains from 86 to 60! The added express trains are expected to increase ridership (= more revenue) and improve equipment usage efficiencies (= lower costs). Of course, there’s also a downer: fares should increase by an average of 17.5 percent and service to 4 stations will be suspended. But still, I think this is a pretty good proposal …

FLIRT for Budapest - or maybe not?

Recently, Stadler announced an order for 30 4-section FLIRT trainsets from the Hungarian National Railway (MAV) (see press release). However, there is some controversy regarding this order and the contract may not be signed.

Angel Trains places order for TRAXX locomotives.

Bombardier has been awarded an order for 36 TRAXX locomotives. 26 of these will be F140 MS - Angel Trains thus becomes the second customer to order this type (after SBB).

The press release is here (site requires Flash).

New photos uploaded to railroadpictures.net
